Wade, Tornadoes, and a School Visit

Someone requested a picture of my nephew, and I just received some new pictures this week. Here you go; Wade Leland Janssen makes his debut on the blog. He is growing like a weed and it won't be too long before he'll get to go on his first storm chase with me. Alright, so that might be pushing it a little bit and I'm not sure if his mom would be willing to let him go, especially with me.

I had a chance to visit some of the high school kids at Wichita East Tuesday morning. We covered mathematics in meteorology (one area I wasn't so good at in college) and I had the kids doing conversions on the different temperature scales. It was just early enough in the morning that I bribed the kids with chocolate candy for answering some of my questions.

There has been another tornado outbreak already this year. We watched another round of tornadoes hit east of Kansas and there has been significant damage in the Memphis area. I don't know if this is any indication of how our severe weather season will be, but it is definitely off to an early start in places that don't normally get severe weather until April or May. Very interesting to say the least!

Ross your nephew is adorable!
Math was one thing I was not good at either, I'm sure the kids appreiciated the bribe! :)

I can't believe how crazy the weather across the country has been! I'm ready for more days like this past Monday. :)

Ahh, how cute! Thanks for sharing your nephew's picture. My nephew changes everyday and it's just amazing!

So glad you get to visit the HS's, I'm sure the kids would love to have you come by (even without the candy).

I do realize it's still winter, but this snow has got to go! I was the umbrella winner on Tuesday night, so if anything, I'm ready for rain. ha ha. Ty, where's the spring count down!! Of course, that means tornado's, but it seems they're already here. The latest tornado victims are in my prayers.

Have a safe day.

Candy always helps motivate kids to do work. I am sure that your nephew will be more than happy to go storm chasing once he is old enough and of course his mom lets him.

I didn't think it was right when I got a text me 12 alert on the Thunderstorm warning the other night. Hope we don't have a huge out break like in the early 90s.

Thanks again for coming to speak to my students. It was the talk of the classroom today - everyone rubbing it in to those who were gone yesterday. Even more than the candy, I think they enjoyed a break from me (and homework) for the day. ;)

Your nephew is absolutely adorable. I miss my niece at that age. She may not be debuting on a blog, but she is debuting in her school spelling bee tomorrow. (Sorry, a proud aunt had to put in a little plug.)

Have a great day!

Howdy All,

Hope everyone is doing well! Sorry I haven't been around as I finally got what all my co-workers had, its makin' its way through the office I think, so I was out sick for a few days tryin' to kick it. Unfortunately I didn't get to enjoy the mild temps on Monday and was not excited about the snow on Tuesday evening as I know most of you weren't either. So on with the COUNT DOWN...40 days remaining until the first Official Day of Spring! If you are like me it can't get here fast enough!

Ross your nephew looks so cute and he is getting BIG QUICK, we can tell your a proud uncle! He is even holding is head up already! I am so anxious to have my own soon, but thats another count down.

I can't believe those winter tornadoes that spawned, does anyone relate this to global warming? I do feel sorry for those families that were affected by this natural disaster.

Take care all, stay well, and lets KEEP BLOGGING! I look forward to catching up now that I'm well.

*Thanks for those that emailed me to check-in that I was ok. Nice to know you were watching out for me.

I asked my mom if I could go storm chasing with you and she will only let me go if her and dad can go too. Pick us up for the next storm!

According to CBS News, http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/02/07/ap/national/main3800724.shtml?source=search_story the storm prediction center down the road in Norman had alerts out 6 days in advance. Sounds like may be we are getting better at forecasting storms.

Glad to hear that you are doing better Ty!

Don't you think they should fire the old man and finally make Ross the chief? Who doesn't love him?

Um....no I don't think they should fire Merrill. He is great, but so is Ross!! I think KWCH has the best weather TEAM in Kansas, and I'd hate to see any of them go! But I will say, I love your blog Ross, and the wonderful things you share with us, especially about the weather. I was wondering if you could tell us more about the JASON project, as it really sounds interesting. I was also wondering if you might fill us in on a little about your spring special coming up....any more ideas?

It is so good to see people feeling better again, and I'm sorry to hear you were feeling bad Ty. It seems like the flus and infections are just getting more and more serious and harder to get over. So nice to have that spring count down back!

Ross, your nephew is sure a cutie. I think he has that "meteorologist" look, and with those bright eyes, he surely will at least be a storm chaser! I am wondering if the latest breakouts of winter tornadoes is a sign of things to come. I really do think all of this is greatly related to global warming, and wish we new more about it. My heart sure goes out to those that lost loved ones and homes.

Well, like Ty said, everyone KEEP BLOGGING!! It's good to see everyones thoughts!
