April snows - it could be reality

Hope you are having a good and safe week. The news lately has been pretty tough on all of us, so the burden to find some good "weather" news keeps going up every day. We still have some more nice weather to finish off this week, but what's coming late this weekend may not be that appealing to anyone. Sure wish there was something I could do to change it.

What's going on for the end of the week?

We have a squeeze play happening between a low coming from the southwest (shown above) and a cold front approaching from the north (in the map below). This will be our next chance for some rain AND.... snow. That's right, we do have a snow chance coming on Easter Sunday.

Saturday probably won't be that cold - in fact if the sun comes out at all, we could easily get some 70° weather. Rain chances are low throughout the day Saturday. However, as we get into the overnight and Easter Sunday, chances will ramp up. It won't be very much in the way of precipitation, but chances are there nonetheless. I would expect most of Kansas will get less than .25"

When was the last Easter snow? Actually, it was as long ago as you might think:
Please note that in 2016, Easter was in late March.

April snows have happened as recently as:

Big time cold blast:

What's coming in behind the late weekend cold front is not very appealing for some of you. Especially right now as some of us want to get outside for some fresh air while we are cooped up at home. Much of the Plains states are going to be 15 to 20° below average. It's just crazy. I don't think we will have record low temperatures, but we shall see. We will get another hard freeze for the area at the beginning of the week.

Is this winter's last stand??
Sure looks like it - I would say it is safe to go ahead with spring planting after we pass our 2nd full week of April. The pattern should shift around, so by April 22nd looks like we will be safe from freezing temperatures. See the maps below. Normal highs in late April go into the 70s and lows in the 40s. We are back closer to normal for the later stages of this month.

Have a great day!
