Possible midweek blizzard

Welcome to what will likely be a crazy week in Kansas weather. First, the week starts out with 80s, then we have a storm midweek, and we will wrap it all up late this week with a possible freeze in the plains. So buckle up & be ready.

Monday - Wednesday:
As you will notice over the next couple of days, spring warmth will cover most of our area. Although temperatures are going to be running about 15° above normal, we probably won't set too many records in the coming days. Most record highs are close to 90, and I don't think we will be in that territory. The bigger the temperature contrast (from warm to cold), the greater potential of a stronger low pressure, and that's why we are going to see such a wild swing in the weather midweek.

The magnitude of the warmth will be matched by the magnitude of the cool down later this week. And in between, there will be a storm that could lead to blizzard conditions for some areas in Kansas. Snow in April isn't unheard of, but a blizzard would be pushing the boundaries a bit, especially this far south.

The track of this storm should move across western Kansas Wednesday afternoon and lift into Nebraska by early Thursday. Snow is expected to fall from Colorado and northwest Kansas and into the northern Plains. It's early to say how much snow, but some areas could get 6" or more to our north.

Powerful winds likely:
We will have to be on the watch for wind gusts around (or even above) 50 mph. So fire danger will be very high during the middle of the week.

Watching for frost/freeze late in the week:
Temperatures will drop by Thursday and Friday, with threats of freezing temperatures for SOME Friday morning and ALL areas by Saturday morning. So much will depend on how much wind we still have at the end of the week. That's going to dictate how cold temperatures get AND for how long.
