Meteor shower, another rain chance & possible frost

Aside from the fact we do need rain in Kansas, the weather is looking good the next few days with decent May temperatures and wind that won't be out of control. Since the weather looks pretty tame around here with mainly clear skies, you might be interested in viewing a meteor shower OR... the SpaceX Starlink satellites.

Meteor Shower - Eta Aquarids

  • Peaking Tuesday morning - but still visible Tuesday night
  • Get away from any city lights
  • Look straight up - still possible to see 1 to 2 meteors every 5-10 minutes
Next rain chance - Thursday evening

There should be a cold front coming into the area, which will run into some rich Gulf of Mexico moisture. Severe threat is very LOW - but we should get some rain and storms to develop over central and eastern Kansas into the late afternoon and early evening. Highest amounts of rain will once again go east of the Flint Hills, but some amounts up to .25" look possible in central Kansas. The front coming in will shove the rain into Oklahoma shortly after midnight.

Frost potential late week?

It would be detrimental for sure on the wheat crop. I'm seeing several fields in southern Kansas where it has heads and already filling. The last thing we would want is frost. Chances are we will get through just fine, but temperatures CAN'T get any colder or we will be in trouble. The mornings to watch carefully will be Saturday morning and Monday morning. Right now, our forecast is keeping temperatures above freezing, but it's going to be getting uncomfortably close in spots.

Here's one forecast model for Saturday morning:
The winds will be light and skies look to be clear. This is a setup for maximum cooling into the morning.

Sunday morning looks chilly too - however, there will be some wind to keep temperatures from getting too cold. However, we still think some areas will start in the 30s.

And Monday morning:
Clouds or some wind could sure help us out and we may have some clouds starting to roll in early Monday. We will see if that trend continues in the models.

The next couple of weeks still look relatively benign when it comes to active weather in the Plains. We will have some occasional chances for rain/thunder, but I'm still holding off thinking that most of our May rainfall will come in the last few weeks of the month.
