What is the "pineapple express" - and more records threatened

Happy Friday everyone. As a TV meteorologist, we understand there are a bunch of different technical terms out there related to weather that may not make much sense. So on the air, we try to keep things simple (mainly because of time restrictions), but here on the blog, we can dive into the science a little more for the weather enthusiasts out there. A couple of questions have come in recently asking what is the "pineapple express".

The pineapple express is the flow of moisture that comes in from the waters around Hawaii. The steady stream of moisture can cause flooding concerns and mud slides. And because it's associated with some strong wind aloft, gusty winds near the ground can be expected with the steady rains. It gets the name "pineapple express" just because of the origin of the moisture plume (Hawaii has a lot of pineapple production)

California is currently in the midst of this intense moisture band, and it will lead to some BIG rains through the weekend. Forecast models indicate up to 5 inches will fall over northern California by the start of Sunday. And it will likely go much higher by Monday. Strong winds and mudslides continue to be concerns for areas north of San Francisco.

Our weather will be quite the opposite with warm temperatures, dry weather, and not too much wind through Saturday. Record highs are likely Saturday with much of the state getting well into the 70s. Enjoy and have a terrific weekend.
