Flooding concerns are HIGH this week

The week is off to a bit of a rough start after last nights storms rolled through central and southern Kansas. There were about a dozen different tornado sightings, most of them fairly brief and small. However, we did have one decent tornado that develop in Rice county and the southeast corner of Barton county. Let's hope we can stay away from those kinds of storms the next few days, but this is May in Kansas after all.

Flooding - A HUGE concern through midweek!
Given that many areas have had heavy rains in the last week, the ground isn't able to take on any more water right now. So anything we get between now and early Thursday will only cause more runoff and concerns of flooded roads and ditches. The graphic shown above highlights many areas of Kansas getting 2" of rain or more. Some areas are going to get more! Please remember that flooding generally kills more people each year than tornadoes. Flood water is nothing to mess with, so don't drive into high water.

Timing:
Severe storms will begin later this afternoon, probably after 3 or 4 pm across southwest and central Kansas. As the evening continues, the severe threat will gradually shift south. So please stick with us as we watch for the storms to fire up and begin to impact the area. Tornadoes will likely be brief and isolated, but we need to be prepared.

The severe threat on Tuesday should shift south of Kansas and mainly impact Texas and Oklahoma. However, Wednesday, the threat will return to south central and eastern Kansas.

It will be busy through midweek. Updates to come!
