March Madness

Well, you either love it or hate it because it messes up your evening TV programs. The NCAA tournament starts Thursday and if you are like me, you are trying to figure out which one of the top teams will fall first (I hope it's not the Jayhawks). It is nice to see the Big 12 so well represented in the tournament this year. Enjoy the games.

I have a couple of friends send me this picture from the downtown Atlanta area when the storms came rolling through. It is very hard, even as a meteorologist, to correctly identify all of the features that we are seeing in the picture. At first glance, it looks like a shelf cloud moving through. Shelf clouds stretch for several miles across the horizon and are usually associated with strong winds. In the background, the lightning is illuminating torrential rainfall and probably some hail. I don't know for sure where the tornado is located in all of this, but if indeed that is a shelf cloud stretching across the horizon, tornadoes can sometimes form on the leading edge. It is very possible that the tornado that hit Atlanta is not even in this picture. All of this is proof that storm identification can be very difficult, even for trained professionals. Nighttime spotting is even harder, which is why we don't normally recommend it unless spotters have some access to radar in the field.
Despite the tornado and some of the damage that was left behind, I'm sure they are grateful for the rain. Remember, this is an area that has been plagued with drought for quite some time now.
Alright, good luck to your NCAA teams!

This is the best time of the year when it comes to basketball. I really enjoy the tournament especially the first two weekends when there are so many games.

That is a very cool picture that you have in your blog. It is a cool picture.

Rock Chalk Jayhawks! :) Good luck to everyone in their picks.

Hey All,

Shelly I couldn't believe that you heard me from Salina, lol! Well after quite a countdown...it was OFFICIALLY HERE TODAY, THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING and WOW was it a gorgeous day here in Wichita, KS. Light wind, the sun was shining warm and bright. Definately a great day!

Regarding the NCAA, may the best team win, but GO WILDCATS! Rock Chalk Chicken Hawks!!! :-)

Hope everyone had a great day and has a great rest of the week, we are over the hump!

Ross, glad you were able to use the pic and thanks for that little bit of explanation as well.

Keep in touch everyone.

Hey gang! And happy spring to everyone!!! It really has been great weather to start things off. And yes Ty, I did hear you clear up here in
Salina. But I knew you were getting pretty anxious!! Now that it is officially here, I hope things continue nice and winter makes a permanent exit.

Boy those Kansas teams are doing great so far in the NCAA. What a GREAT game the Wildcats played Thursday night. GO PURPLE!! I was very proud of them. I also have to give KU their props too. I think they way outplayed Portland State, and they definitely showed why they are a #1 seed!

We have family arriving from Oregon today for the weekend. I hope that everyone has a great holiday and HAPPY EASTER!!

This has been a great NCAA tournament, I don't know how Duke was able to win last night but it was a great game, as was the K-State game.

I don't know who picked W.Kentucky to win and Connecticut would lose.

Hope everyone has a great Easter! Enjoy it!
